Palacio Urgoiti known aswell as the "Gallo" or "Adán de Yarza" was built by Don Miguel Vélez de Larrea at the end of the XVII century.

Its strategic situation at Galdakao, that dominated the roads of Arratia and Zornotza, made of the Palace Urgoiti an scenary for different events in the history of Bizkaia and the meeting place for distinguished visitors, among them the Infante Don Carlos de Borbon who was a pretender of the throne and a Isabel II enemy, whom used the Palace to stay several times.
While the Velez de Larrea was an important entailment, the one of Jacinta Adan de Yarza whom he married was even more important.

Once with the Adan de Yarza name, he built the Palacio of Zubieta in Lekeitio. These two baroque palaces constitute without a doubt an example of the most beautiful palace architecture from Bizkaia.
There were many Adan de Yarza who lived in these palaces or the towers that preceded these, among them Rodrigo Adan de Yarza who was major of Bizkaia since 1338.

In the Low Middle Age the members of this lineage took part as Major Sirs in the wars of Banderizos generally in the band of the Onacinos.
Another curiosity of the history is that Pedro Adan de Yarza was among the majors of Bizkaia that negotiated with the King under the tree of Gernika the first order of the bask jurisdiction in 1342 and was with the pass of the time, Mario Adan de Yarza the one who attend the General Committee of Abril 1877 as General Deputy from Bizkaia at the same place, to reject the Law that abolished the jurisdictions in spite of this, the same year the jurisdictions were abolished and the Bizkaia General Council was disolved.

It is remarkable the innumerable services to the King just like Rodrigo Adan de Yarza whom was secretary of the Catholic Kings since 1487, president of the Real Hacienda, of the Indias, and from its Royal Advice, and whom also is mentioned in the conquer of Granada, Sevila or the defense of San Sebastian. Also was Admiral and Captain of the Bizkaia coasts, Guipuzcoa, Asturias and Galicia up to Portugal. Also Antonio Navarro de Larreategui (1554 - 1624) who changed his last name to Adan de Yarza, secretary of the King Felipe III, secretary of the real archives from Simancas and secretary of the Prince Filiberto Manuel de Saboya, major of Logrono and Sir of the Arcos, as well as Preboste de Lekeitio as all of his predecessors.

We cant stop without talk about Carlos Adan de Yarza (1812 - 1863), liberal politic, major of Bilbao and General Deputy of Bizkaia who make the same effort in planting trees in Bilbao than the Palace of Zubieta . Nor Mario Adan de Yarza (1846-1920) whom was General Deputy of Bizkaia aswell and shared his fathers passion for the botanic.

Thanks to him, after a first try in the gardens of the Zubieta Palace and using after the lands of the Palacio Urgoiti, the introduction and begining of the industrial explotaition of the pine Radiata de Monterrey or pine Insignis. This specie was so-called green gold because of the reforestation of the Bizkaia mounts, damaged by very large periods of explotaition and the richness it generated to the rural ground.
Is not the subject to forget, by infrequent, that after three centuries, the posession of the Zubieta and Urgoiti Palaces still under the power of the same family.
Nowadays (1968),

the Palacio Urgoiti was expropiated and demolished because of the construction of the motorway Bilbao-Behobia. Jose Maria Solano Gil-Delgado Adan de Yarza (1927 - 1998) owner of the Palace, decided to detach it stone by stone, and it was until the years 2004 and 2005 when it reconstruction took place in its actual location between Bilbao and Mungia. As the stones were moved from its original position with the floods of 1983, there was a very long process of cataloguing them back with advanced techniques of archeology to find the place that they originally used to be.
This wonderful reconstruction, that used fine materials mantains the style and the original trace of the Palace Urgoiti, allow us to keep enjoying of this beautiful jewel of the palace architecture from Bizkaia.
